Description
Food Run is a level-based one button platformer for iOS. Dash, jump, wall slide, stomp and bounce your way through 40 levels of food-based mayhem, defeating Wee'vils, Chompies and more along the way. Guide a line of food characters known as the food chain to the end of each level, picking up more foods along the way.
History
DevelopmentFood Run has been in development for 18 months by Pixels on Toast founder Kevin Ng. Inspired by console platform games such as Super Mario World, Pixels on Toast is attempting to combine the mayhem of more complex platformers with the simplicity of a one button interface. The music was provided by jazz musician Skip Peck.
Gameplay conceptFood Run combines a simple, one button interface with a more complex level-based platform game. Gameplay depth comes from the combination of enemies, traps, level elements and level design.
Level designLevels are designed with variety, flow, and a ramping difficulty in mind. New enemies and level elements are introduced all the way to the end of the game. This helps to give each level it's own identity, keeping gameplay fresh throughout.

Selected Articles
- "The remarkable thing is that Food Run feels like a real platformer, much more so than any of its competition on iOS, yet is built on such simple controls. You'll never be able to get something as good as Super Mario World on a touch-screen, but this feels as close as it's possible to get."
- Rich Stanton, Eurogamer - "It starts off simple and becomes more complicated as you progress. Eventually you'll find yourself cursing at it."
- Mike Fahey, Kotaku - "Bright and breezy, Food Run has plenty of charm and a decent selection of levels to keep you entertained for a time."
- John Bedford, Modojo - "A great example of the complexity that can be achieved within such a simple control scheme."
- Graeme Gallacher, Past the Pixels - "The controls are unfailingly responsive, and while later levels are challenging, they’re short enough to encourage an instant replay should you have missed any stars or groceries as you cross the finish line."
- Edge staff, Edge - "Not only is this game cute (seriously, you can be a walking hamburger that squeaks out a grunt when it jumps), it’s extremely well-polished and altogether beautiful."
- Sam Nolan, StickSkills
